How I Prepare for a Backstage Photoshoot
From my go-to photo gear to what I wear and how I stay in tune with the action, here’s a sneak peek into my backstage routine
Ever wondered what it takes to capture the fast-paced magic behind the runway? Backstage at a fashion show is a whirlwind of chaos and creativity, and capturing it requires a mix of preparation, instinct, and a sharp eye for detail. As a professional photographer, the energy behind the scenes is where the real, unscripted fashion moments come to life. Here's how I prepare myself to capture the magic in all its authenticity.
All photos in this article were captured by me, backstage at the Rotate SS25 show.
1. Get the Right Gear Ready (But Keep It Light)
When it comes to backstage photography, I always stick to the essentials. My go-to is a lightweight camera body with a versatile lens, like a 24-70mm or a 24-105mm, to ensure I can move swiftly through tight corners and crowded spaces. I always pack a flash, as backstage lighting can be unpredictable, and you never know how much natural light you'll have to work with. And, of course, spare batteries and memory cards are a must, running out of power mid-shoot is simply not an option!
2. Know the Show's Vibe
Every fashion show has its own distinct energy, so I always take time to research the brand and designer beforehand. Whether it’s edgy avant-garde or timeless elegance, knowing the theme and tone helps me anticipate the key moments backstage.
3. Dress the Part
While comfort is key, I always make sure my look is on point. A head-to-toe black ensemble is the ultimate backstage look - sleek, timeless, and effortlessly chic. I typically go for a black dress with a blazer or a black top or shirt paired with tailored pants, finished with flat shoes or boots that allow me to move quickly and easily.
4. Build Trust with the Team
One of the most important aspects of backstage photography is blending in while still capturing those intimate, unguarded moments. This means being very respectful of the makeup artists, stylists, and models who are all on tight schedules. A quick introduction and a friendly smile can go a long way in building rapport, allowing me to slip into the action without disturbing the flow.
5. Stay Flexible (Because Nothing Goes to Plan)
Backstage is a living, breathing organism where nothing ever goes exactly as planned, and that’s part of the beauty. My approach is to remain adaptable, staying on my toes to capture those spontaneous moments, whether it’s the designer doing a last-minute hem fix or models laughing just before they hit the runway. Flexibility is everything.
6. The Right Mindset Is Key
Beyond the technical and logistical prep, I always take a moment to center myself before stepping into the frenetic backstage environment. Staying calm, focused, and ready to capture the unexpected allows me to make the most of the beautiful chaos that is backstage at a fashion show.
Hope this can serve as some inspiration!
